Brazilian heavy metal outfit Phornax released their first full length studio album, ‘Hellforge‘ through Phornax Records.
Across ten tracks, the band combine traditional heavy metal with elements of power and speed metal, twin guitar work, powerful vocals and a modern but organic production.
At the heart of ‘Hellforge‘ lies the symbolism of the forge itself.
The album is built around the idea that steel only reaches its true strength after passing through fire, using that process as a metaphor for human experience.
Fear, loss, conflict and adversity become forces capable of shaping a person, with resilience, transformation and rebirth forming the central themes of the record.
Musically, Phornax have used the album to expand their established heavy metal foundations without abandoning them.
Heavy riffs and melodic twin guitars are joined by memorable choruses and increased speed, while the production gives the songs contemporary weight without sacrificing the character of traditional metal.
‘Forged in Metal‘ opens the album and establishes the essence of this new chapter, while ‘Hell’s Paradise‘, ‘Seeds of Strife‘, ‘Ghosts From the Past‘ and ‘Blood For Blood‘ explore different aspects of inner conflict, memories, loss and the choices that ultimately shape identity.
‘Silent War‘, completely rerecorded for the album, provides a direct connection between the band’s past and present.
That connection is particularly significant for an album arriving after a hiatus of more than twelve years.
The singles ‘Between Fear and Hope‘, ‘A Matter of Time‘ and ‘Hell’s Paradise‘, together with Phornax’s return to live performances, provided the foundations for the record and gradually led towards the band’s most substantial release to date.
For vocalist Cristiano Poschi, the hell of the album title is not a physical place, but the adversity everyone encounters at some point in life.
The forge represents what happens when those experiences are endured and transformed, with even the deepest scars potentially becoming a source of strength.
‘Hellforge‘ was produced, mixed and mastered by Renato Osorio and represents Phornax’s definitive return as a recording band.
Rather than simply looking back at their roots, the album uses them as the foundation for a heavier and more developed incarnation of the band’s sound, turning conflict and adversity into the central force behind its ten songs.
