The History of the Greek Scorpions Fan Club
For many people, music is simply entertainment.
For others, however, it is something that gives their lives meaning.
Rock fans, in particular, share a special bond with their favourite artists.
The SCORPIONS are among the bands that have enjoyed an extraordinary level of popularity in Greece.
Their records can be found in the collections of thousands of Greek fans who have celebrated their music since the mid-1970s and enthusiastically welcomed them at their concerts in Greece from 1990 onwards.
The truth is, it should have happened years earlier, perhaps even in the mid-1970s.
All that was needed was a spark to set everything in motion.
And so, back in the autumn of 1997, a small advertisement in the well-known Metal magazines of the time was enough to bring together a few ‘unusual‘ individuals who all shared one thing:
their love for the Scorpions.
The first letters were exchanged, the first phone calls were made, and a tradition was established:
club members would meet for coffee on the first Sunday of every month.
Long conversations and shared interests gradually strengthened the bonds between members, and the fan club began to take shape.
Around 30 people formed the original core of the Greek Scorpions Fan Club (G.S.F.C.), with members coming from Athens as well as other parts of Greece.
The first gatherings took place in cafés around Victoria Square in Athens. Initially, we occupied just one or two tables, but our circle of friends continued to grow.
The conversations seemed endless:
impressions, emotions, memories, personal experiences, and plans for the future.
Soon, the first parties were organised, giving members the opportunity to spend time together beyond the club’s regular monthly meetings.
All of this eventually led to the creation of the legendary fanzine ‘Hurricane‘ in early 1998.
The inspiration came from several factors:
the lack of information about the band, the unjustified indifference of the Greek music press, and the desire to share opinions and thoughts with fellow fans.
‘Hurricane’ kept our friends informed about everything related to the Scorpions and their former members, including news, special features, interviews, lyrics, and much more.
As time went by, with the creation of our website and the internet becoming an integral part of everyday life, the fanzine gradually changed its publication schedule.
Today, it is released whenever there is a particular reason to do so.
Meanwhile, the parties continued and became another essential part of the G.S.F.C.’s activities.
Membership steadily increased, as everyone attending our events had a fantastic time, made new friends, enjoyed the unforgettable songs of the SCORPIONS, and had the opportunity to experience rare audiovisual material featuring the band.
Over the years, we shared unforgettable moments at venues such as Seismos, Texas, Revenge Of Rock, Wild Thing, Outlaw, Singles, Rooster, and Hard Rock Cafe Athens.
There wasn’t a single venue that didn’t invite the fan club back for another party!
Some particularly memorable occasions involved musicians who had been part of the Scorpions’ history.
Uli Jon Roth, Francis Buchholz, Jürgen Rosenthal, Paweł Mąciwoda, Michael Schenker, Herman Rarebell, and James Kottak all joined us at parties organised in their honour.
James Kottak even treated our members to a special acoustic guitar performance!
Meanwhile, Rudolf Schenker, Klaus Meine, and Matthias Jabs have also expressed their interest and desire to attend one of our events in the future.
Before a Scorpions concert in Faliro, Klaus Meine spoke with members of the fan club and specifically mentioned our party at the Hard Rock Cafe featuring Herman Rarebell.
Klaus said he had been impressed by the enthusiastic comments Herman had shared with him about the event.
Naturally, technological developments also played an important role in the club’s evolution.
Our official website was launched in 1999, while in 2008, the fan club established its presence on Myspace and Facebook.
It is also worth mentioning that the G.S.F.C. has repeatedly been invited to appear on radio stations such as Capital, Rock FM, ERA Sport, Epikoinonia FM, Atlantis, and Rockmachine.gr.
These appearances provided opportunities to present our ‘Hurricane‘ fanzine, discuss the club’s activities, and broadcast special programmes entirely dedicated to the Scorpions.
Our appearances on the internet radio stations Rockmachine.gr and Isart.gr were particularly successful, attracting 1,250 and 1,800 listeners respectively.
These listeners tuned in from Greece, Russia, Chile, Canada, the United States, England, Ireland, Germany, Cyprus, Austria, Sweden, Hungary, the Netherlands, Australia, and Turkey!
Over the years, the G.S.F.C. has actively supported concert promoters who brought the Scorpions and former members such as Uli Jon Roth and Michael Schenker to Greece.
Our involvement has included ticket distribution, concert promotion, writing press releases, and acting as a media sponsor.
In addition, the club organised Herman Rarebell’s press conference for the presentation of his new audiobook, ‘My Life As A Scorpion‘, as well as the compilation ‘Herman’s Collection‘.
Another important part of our activities has been organising trips to concerts.
Over the years, we have arranged dozens of excursions to see the Scorpions perform live.
We followed their entire tour through Greece, attended their concerts in Thessaloniki in 2004, 2005, and 2006, and travelled abroad to events such as the legendary Wacken festival, Colmar, and several UK tours in 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008, among many others.
The Greek Scorpions Fan Club is one big family, a circle of friends that anyone can join and become an active part of.
All that is required is to submit your contact details (mobile phone number and email address) through our website to receive updates about upcoming events.
We have deliberately chosen not to charge any registration or membership fees, allowing everyone to participate freely, whenever and for as long as they wish.
And when someone asks us, ‘What do the SCORPIONS mean to us?‘, the answer comes naturally.
They are the thunderous rock rhythms, the deeply emotional ballads, the dreamlike and majestic vocals of Klaus Meine, the guitar fireworks of Rudolf, Uli, and Matthias, and the wild Rock ‘n’ Roll rhythms of Francis Buchholz and Herman Rarebell.
They are the unforgettable melodies, the romanticism, and the explosive stage presence that established them as one of the greatest bands on the planet, with millions of devoted fans around the world.
They are a special part of our lives.
A musical journey that began many years ago and continues beyond boundaries and conventional paths…
