To mark their tenth anniversary, Italian symphonic metal outfit Secret Rule entered a new chapter with the release of ‘X‘, an album that looks firmly toward the future while remaining true to the band’s unmistakable identity.
Rather than celebrating the past through nostalgia, the record embraces evolution, presenting Secret Rule at their most adventurous, confident, and contemporary.
Written by the band’s creative core, vocalist Angela Di Vincenzo and guitarist, producer, and songwriter Andy Menario, ‘X‘ expands the group’s established blend of melodic and symphonic metal with a range of fresh influences.
Rap-inspired vocal passages, syncopated breakdowns, and richer electronic textures are woven naturally into the band’s cinematic sound, creating an album that feels both familiar and strikingly modern.
Throughout the record, powerful melodies and anthemic choruses remain at the heart of the songwriting, but they are framed by a bolder and more dynamic musical approach.
The album also marks an important moment in the band’s evolution with the arrival of bassist Sofia Basili and drummer Andrea Miazzetto.
Although joining during the album’s development, both musicians quickly left their mark.
Basili brings a deep rhythmic groove along with expressive backing vocals, while Miazzetto’s energetic and versatile drumming adds both weight and fluidity, strengthening the album’s overall impact.
As with previous releases, Secret Rule maintained complete creative control throughout the production process.
Andy Menario handled the arrangements, mixing, and mastering, giving the album its polished yet cinematic character, while Angela Di Vincenzo crafted the vocal melodies and emotionally driven lyrics.
Their long-established partnership results in a remarkably cohesive record, with every song contributing to a carefully developed artistic vision.
Lyrically, ‘X‘ explores themes of collapse, resilience, and renewal.
Environmental concerns, personal struggles, identity, and the search for hope in an increasingly chaotic digital world are recurring motifs throughout the album.
Songs such as ‘Collapse‘ and ‘Echoes of the Earth‘ reflect on humanity’s uncertain future, while ‘Silent Pain‘ and ‘Just a Sacrifice‘ shift the focus inward, confronting emotional wounds and inner conflict.
Elsewhere, tracks including ‘Destiny Reload‘, ‘The Storm‘, and ‘The Answer‘ offer a more determined outlook, balancing vulnerability with strength and perseverance.
The album also reveals another side of the band through ‘Walking Down the Street‘, whose almost pop-metal energy demonstrates Secret Rule’s willingness to experiment without losing their musical identity.
One particularly notable moment comes with ‘Lost In Paradise‘, featuring the first lead vocal performance by Andy Menario alongside Angela Di Vincenzo and special guest Marco Pastorino, adding another fresh dimension to the album.
With ‘X‘, Secret Rule prove that reaching a milestone does not have to mean looking backwards.
Instead, the album captures a band determined to evolve, challenge expectations, and continue refining its own distinctive voice within modern melodic and symphonic metal.
Bold in its ideas yet firmly rooted in memorable songwriting, ‘X‘ stands as one of the band’s most ambitious and forward-thinking releases to date.
