Austrian death/black metal outfit Richthammer return with their new single ‘Durch Trieb zur Qual‘, a fierce and uncompromising release that further sharpens the band’s dark, evolving identity.
Produced, recorded, mixed, and mastered by Victor Bullok at Woodshed Studios in Germany, the track arrives with a striking visual counterpart directed by Jakob Wallner – together forming a visceral statement that reflects both precision and raw intensity.
Emerging from Waidhofen an der Ybbs in 2009, Richthammer have spent over a decade forging their place within the extreme metal underground.
Their early years were defined by relentless live activity and participation in numerous band contests, experiences that not only shaped their sound but also earned them early recognition and momentum.
The release of their debut demo ‘Gematert Geschunden Verheert‘ in 2012 marked their first step into recorded territory, laying the groundwork for what would become a steadily evolving artistic vision.
As the years progressed, Richthammer expanded both their musical scope and their presence on stage.
Appearances at major events such as Donauinselfest, alongside international shows and support slots for acts like Týr and Moonsorrow, solidified their reputation as a formidable live band.
At the same time, internal shifts in lineup and direction pushed the group toward new creative territories.
This evolution reached a significant milestone with the release of their concept album ‘Ascheland‘ in 2018, produced by Jay Hundert.
The record showcased a more refined and ambitious approach, blending atmosphere, aggression, and narrative depth.
The subsequent Ascheland-Tour saw the band perform at notable festivals including Kaltenbach Open Air, MetalDays, and Sick Midsummer, while sharing stages with heavyweights such as Dimmu Borgir, Rotting Christ, and Carpathian Forest.
Changes continued to shape the band’s trajectory, with a guitarist transition in 2019 bringing fresh energy into the fold, followed by another shift during the enforced pause of 2020 – a period the band used for reflection and creative renewal.
These developments have fed directly into their current direction, one that embraces both continuity and reinvention.
Now, with ‘Durch Trieb zur Qual‘, Richthammer offer a glimpse into the next chapter.
The single hints at a forthcoming album that promises a bilingual approach and an even deeper exploration of their morbid, abstract take on black and death metal.
