Canadian alt-rock act
RAT SILO
has released album
‘Id’
Rat Silo’s ‘Id‘ —named after the Freudian concept of the primal psyche— is the band’s third album with its current lineup.
This post-punk/alt-rock powerhouse merges the visceral energy of a power trio with the dynamic textures of looping and sampling.
Unlike many bands striving for digital perfection, Rat Silo embraces the chaos.
The music is unpolished, unapologetic, and packed with raw authenticity—mistakes and all.
It’s neither improvised nor overly calculated;
it’s the sound of a band baring its soul with unrelenting conviction.
The tracks explore a spectrum of moods:
slow and fast, subtle and intense.
Lyrically, ‘Id’ tackles themes of self-preservation, extreme self-doubt, persecution, and moral dilemmas, delivering an unsettling yet captivating listening experience.
Fans of The Cure, Radiohead, Killing Joke, and Public Image Limited will find themselves right at home with Rat Silo’s distinctive blend of grit and groove.

‘Killedaman‘ by BC’s Rat Silo:
Facing the unbearable silence of the self…
Rat Silo:
“Yes, I did it. I knew it was wrong and I did it anyways. I watched my hands do it. I did it. I am here. He is not. What does THAT mean? He is gone. Where is your God now? Would I run if you let me? I see how you look at me. I deserve worse. It is all the truth and all a lie. It is day and night at the same time all of the time. I have nothing left to give. I threw everything away. Who cares what I think? The Bible says that Hell is the absence of the beloved. You cross the threshold that defines you and you are no longer human. You don’t need to be judged. You will never find redemption. You are writing a story and you cannot bear to end it. Everything that is alive is repulsed by you. Death will not spare you. This goes on forever. All stories have an ending. This is unwritten. Keep walking until you reach the end of the road. There is no map. There are no choices. Born to suffer. Suffer to die. The clock ticks. The heart beats. When does the screaming stop?”
Rat Silo is a remarkable musical entity that defies categorization, blending the sonic prowess of post-rock and punk with an ingenious fusion of disparate influences.
The band consists of four highly talented individuals, each contributing their unique musical abilities alongside electronically enhanced acoustic instruments.
The brainchild of Jim Newton, formerly a member of the renowned Canadian rock band Sons of Freedom, Rat Silo came into existence in 2007.
Jim spearheaded the recording of their debut album, ‘What the Butler Saw‘, during an intensive three-day session.
Joining him were accomplished musicians Don Binns on bass (known for his work with Sons of Freedom, Trailerhawk, Econoline Crush, and Art Bergmann), Sean Stubbs on drums (renowned for his contributions to Numb, SNFU, Jakalope, and Bif Naked), Finn Manniche on guitar (a virtuoso from the Jazzmanian Devils and Van Django), and Dave Osbourne on keyboards (previously associated with 5440).
The album was expertly produced and engineered by Mark Henning.
Following their successful debut, Rat Silo ventured into their second album, ‘doubleplusungood’, recorded under the guidance of Rob Handel (of The Bad Beers) and mixed by the skilled hands of Mark Henning.
This musical endeavor was released to critical acclaim in April 2009.
Their third album, ‘The Great Northern Way‘, marked another milestone for the band, recorded and mixed by the accomplished Dave Ogilvie.
It captivated audiences upon its release in October 2011.
In 2017, the band welcomed Erkan Gencol, a percussionist and electronic DJ based in Vancouver, who added a new layer to their sound with his mesmerizing loops and captivating noises.
Since then, Rat Silo has continued to make their mark on the music scene, releasing three compelling singles:
‘I Sacrifice‘ in 2019, followed by ‘The World Is Going To End Tomorrow‘ and ‘Head On A Stick‘ in 2023.
Additionally, they have gifted their listeners with two albums:
‘The World Is Going To End Tomorrow‘ in 2022 and ‘Unfortunately…‘ in 2023 all recorded by Dave Ogilvie, Liam Moes, and Mike Foster.
Mixed by Anthony Valcic.
These musical offerings showcase the band’s evolving artistry and their ability to push boundaries, delivering a powerful and immersive experience to their audience.
