OVER TIME

Croatian instrumental progressive rock trio Over Time combine complex rhythms, shifting tempos and guitar driven compositions with the energy and weight of classic hard rock.
Based in Split, the independent project places musicianship at the centre of its sound, but without allowing technical complexity to overshadow groove, melody or the chemistry between the three musicians.
Over Time began during the COVID period when drummer Danijel Stojan invited guitarist and songwriter Alen Koljanin to jam in his garage.
Alen arrived with a collection of riffs and compositions built around unusual meters, introducing Danijel to musical structures that ventured far beyond conventional 4/4 rhythms.
What began as an experiment soon developed into a serious project.
Much of the material had already been written, but the songs continued to evolve as the arrangements took shape during rehearsals.
Bassist Luka Brodarić, a Split musician who studied at the Music Academy in Slovenia, eventually joined the project, completing the trio and adding another dimension to its rhythmic foundation.
The band’s approach draws from progressive rock and classic heavy rock, with odd time signatures, multiple tempo changes and strong interaction between guitar, bass and drums forming the backbone of the music.
Heavy passages can suddenly open into more melodic territory, while complicated rhythmic structures are deliberately shaped to retain a natural sense of movement.
That philosophy is particularly evident across Over Time’s compositions.
‘Overtime‘ provides perhaps the clearest representation of the trio’s own musical identity, while ‘4 in 1‘ moves through four different tempos and unusual rhythmic patterns.
The latter also features guest musician Duje Ivić on keyboards, including a keyboard solo.
The band’s influences are acknowledged more directly through several musical tributes.
‘Ode to Rush‘ pays respect to one of progressive rock’s most influential trios, while ‘Für Eddie‘ serves as a musical thank you to Edward Van Halen.
‘L’Zepp‘, meanwhile, draws inspiration from the atmosphere and sheer weight associated with Led Zeppelin.
Despite those recognizable reference points, Over Time are focused primarily on developing original instrumental music rather than simply reproducing the sounds of their influences.
Their compositions use technical ideas as tools rather than as the destination, with melody, groove and the interaction between the musicians remaining equally important.
For Over Time, the principle behind the music is ultimately straightforward, make odd times feel natural, and make them rock.
