Finnish atmospheric progressive metal band Alase has released new EP ‘Beyond Our Imagination’ via Inverse Records.
The EP features four brilliant vocalists.
The soundscapes vary from gloomy and haunting to full of hope.
Guitarist Janne Lunnas comments the EP:
“Our second album ‘A Matter of Time’ was released less than a year ago. Already at that point there were some demos for new songs and we had a good drive to work fast on them. Shortly after the album release we decided that the next release will be a four song EP that will present the most progressive material that Alase has ever done. ‘Beyond Our Imagination’ EP utilizes Alase’s original idea of having several guest vocalists, and we managed to get awesome singers to participate this effort. Opening track ‘Broken Pendulum’ represents Omar Zouiter (Antivalent) on clean vocals and I did some screaming on heavier parts that were inspired by bands like Gojira. On ‘Love Crime’ that was released also as a single and music video, I did a duet with Rioghan Darcy (Rioghan band) and that song showed some new sides about our music. Two last tracks ‘When?’ and ‘A Night to Remember’ are sang by our trustee Juha Tetjakov (Pressure Points & Vansidian). ‘When?’ is kind of a visit back to our doomier soundscape and ‘A Night to Remember’ is more progressive one that starts in very untraditional way for a metal song and ends the EP in epic way.”

Finnish atmospheric progressive metal band Alase released new single ‘Love Crime’.
This track features stunning Rioghan as female vocals for this duet where Alase’s mastermind Janne Lunnas handles male vocals.
The track is taken from the upcoming ‘Beyond Our Imagination’ EP which is set to be released on February 23rd 2024 via Inverse Records.
Guitarist Janne Lunnas comments ‘Love Crime’:
“The upcoming four-track EP ‘Beyond Our Imagination’ had two songs, of which either one would have worked well as a single. However ‘Love Crime’ was chosen as the single because it presents many new aspects of our music. It was such an honour to have Rioghan Darcy of the band Rioghan as the female voice in this duet. This time I was responsible for the male voice myself. ‘Love Crime’ is a story of tormenting love. The song came together pretty quickly as I knew it was a duet and that the other vocalist was Rioghan. That led to me composing what I thought was a bit of ‘Rioghan-style’ stuff, like the electronic drums and synths in the early parts. At that point, I could not guess that I would end up singing the final male parts of the song. Our lyricist Ninni Swan had a vision of how the music video for ‘Love Crime’ should look like. Mikko Parkkonen from Aarni Visuals picked up the ideas and created a mystical garden in his studio with very extraordinary plants. Both Alase and Rioghan have worked closely with Aarni Visuals before, so it was clear that the video would be shot at Aarni’s studio in Seinäjoki.”

Finnish atmospheric progressive metal band Alase has released their second studio album on April 14th 2023 via Inverse Records.
Alase is an atmospheric progressive metal/rock band from Finland.
Their music is a melting pot of various genres, but the main focus is on the melody and atmosphere.
There are a lot of influences outside metal music as well.
Musically, Alase has similarities with bands like Katatonia, A Perfect Circle, The Ocean, Textures and Tesseract, just to name a few.
Guitarist Janne Lunnas comments the album::
“The album ‘A Matter of Time’ shows where Alase is heading towards musically. We are already working on new music and this album leads the way to our new paths. Compared to our debut album ‘Vastaus’, ‘A Matter of Time’ is more versatile and progressive. In a way it is more mature but we also took more musical risks with its material. We even threw in a couple of tracks that go outside the genre of metal music but they still sound like Alase. Those songs also contain more electronic sounds which is a new thing for us. Softer parts on the album are very soft but the heavier parts at their heaviest get really crushing and technical. When it comes to musicianship, this album contains the most demanding stuff that we have so far done. Besides five previously unheard tracks, the album contains four tracks that were released as singles and music videos. Those songs represent the album pretty well but don’t tell the whole story. If you like bands Katatonia, Haken, VOLA and Sleep Token, this album might work for you!”
Vocalists on “A Matter of Time” album and its singles:
Juha Tretjakov:
clean vocals on songs ‘Understanding The Waves’, ‘Clear Sky Is Not a Curse’, ‘Unburden’, ‘Life Ahead’, ‘The Source’, ‘Out of Place’ & ‘Ajan kysymys’
Markus Hirvonen:
all vocals on song ‘Fate’s Intervention’
Janne Lunnas:
all vocals on ‘Feeling Free’, screaming vocals on ‘Understanding The Waves’, ‘Unburden’ & ‘Out of Place’ + ambient & backing vocals on several songs

Finnish atmospheric progressive metal band Alase released a new single and music video ‘Fate’s Intervention’.
The track is taken from their upcoming second studio album ‘A Matter of Time’ which is released on April 14th 2023 via Finnish Inverse Records.
Guitarist Janne comments ‘Fate’s Intervention’:
“Fate’s Intervention” single represents the rougher and darker side of the upcoming ‘A Matter of Time’ album. We chose it as the second single, because we wanted to showcase also the heavier side of the album. Markus Hirvonen performed the vocals on the song which starts with heavy modern style riffing and screaming vocals. After the intro we move to a calmer, but ominous section. The song has lots of twists and turns, but the choruses are more straightforward and have a glimpse of hope. Alase is a fairly guitar-driven band, but we rarely have solos. However, for ‘Fate’s Intervention’ me and Mikko both wanted to play solos. In a way, it was a shame to bury the good rhythmic riffs hidden under the solos, but we are sure that the sharp-eared listeners will pick them up there.”
Lyricist Ninni comments the lyrics and music video:
“While writing the ‘Fate’s Intervention’ lyrics, I could hear in my head that screaming vocals would be well suited for this song. In the text, I did not hold back at all, I just let it come out without censoring myself. Lyrics and music video reflect a person’s struggle with health problems. The screenplay of the music video had been waiting for a suitable moment in my desk drawer for quite a long time. Aarni Visuals created the music video skilfully and in his own personal style. The video supports the spirit of the song perfectly.”

Finnish atmospheric progressive metal band Alase is set to release their second studio album ‘A Matter of Time’ on April 14th 2023 via Finnish Inverse Records.
The new single ‘Clear Sky Is Not a Curse’ has been released.
Guitarist Janne Lunnas comments:
“We chose ‘Clear Sky Is Not a Curse’ as the first single taken from the album as the song is pretty straight-forward but still progressive. This song was born as our other guitarist Mikko sent me the intro’s clean guitar tracks and I started to build other elements on top of them. The song is filled with hooks and it represents many musical elements of the album. Once again our lyricist Ninni Swan managed to capture fragile emotions that many people can relate to. Vocalist Juha Tretjakov sang almost every song on this album and he was a perfect fit as the vocalist for ‘Clear Sky Is Not a Curse’ as well. If I would need to compare the song to other bands, I think this song is pretty much in the same ballpark style-wise with Katatonia and VOLA as they combine beautiful elements to crushing heavy drumming and riffs in similar way. Aarni Visuals filmed a music video to be accompanied with this song and I think they nailed it great how the atmosphere matches with the song.”
