‘Dweller’
Finnish blackened death metal band Progeny of Sun released their anticipated debut album ‘Throne of Desolation’ via Inverse Records.
To celebrate the album release, the band also released new music video ‘Dweller’.
Guitarist Joni talks about the song Dweller:
“This song originates from the early days of the band, composed nearly 4 years ago. The song has been abandoned on multiple occasions, dug up again, attempted to be refined, abandoned once more, but ultimately resurrected for the album in its original form. Upon hearing the result, we were surprised by the unique atmosphere the song brings, which is one of the darkest on the album. ‘Dweller’ is a somewhat strange and raw song, but at the same time, it is also melancholic and beautiful.”
The band talks about the process of making the album:
“‘Do you guys always intend to make only EPs and singles?’ asked a devoted fan from the handsome drummer. This question deeply irritated Juha, and the first seeds for the album were sown. The idea of the album had been brewing in drummer Juha’s mind since ancient times. At the age of seven, he faced a tough life choice: should he get a cap gun or drums? Years later, Juha chose the right path and began practicing drumming without a backing track. The time was ripe for recording the album! Despite the pressure, the recordings went well, but tension and frustration erupted in a gentle confrontation with the composer-guitarist. ‘Come play your drums yourself!’ shouted Juha to Joni from behind his drum kit. This time, Joni knew he was significantly involved in the album, as his compositions made up 52 % of the record. The only problem was that Joni couldn’t remember how any of the songs went. For his fine work, Joni was rewarded 4/5 rating from his outstanding work and a parrot badge. You get those badges in Finland for good deeds, like brownie points.”
“Then it was the maestro’s turn to practice magic in the shadows. Jaakko played his parts to the tape with perfect confidence and without mistakes. As a result, Jaakko also received 4/5 rating and a parrot badge for his performance. Fortunately, both guitarists had tuned their instruments at home before the recordings, so they got through the sessions without any problems.”
Next up were the bass recordings:
“‘One day is probably enough. It’s half an hour, and then I’ll drive home,’ said the bass virtuoso Tuomo confidently. The recordings, stretching into the wee hours of the night, humbled Tuomo, and he admitted, ‘None of these basses went normally.'”
“Finally, the most anticipated moment arrived. King Niko descended into the basement to sing. Even the regional aerobics competition roaring upstairs didn’t prevent Niko from performing his vocal parts with honor. After hard work, Niko was rewarded with a Tupla salary. In Finland we have this candy bar called Tupla which means double, so basically Niko got double salary. However, all vocal parts were eventually redone, but the experience was the most important.”
“The long process was finally completed, with a total of 12 songs in the can. The album was mixed and mastered by Saku Moilanen at Deep Noise Studios.”

‘Courier’
music by Joni Kiviniemi
lyrics by Niko Aromaa
Finnish blackened death metal band Progeny of Sun released their third single ‘Courier’ from the upcoming debut album ‘Throne of Desolation’.
The album is set to be released on December 8th via Inverse Records.
The band comments:
“Joni once woke Pepe up from his nap and excitedly said: ‘I made a song, but I don’t remember how the riffs went.’ Pepe answered sleepily: ‘Add a couple of blast beats to it.’ Since the composition of the riffs was not fully memorized, Joni decided to add all the variations to the same song. Next, Niko gave his soul into the demo, but it was soon forgotten on the drawing board. Months later, the song was accidentally unearthed while making the album. There it was: a forgotten gem, exactly what was needed for the album. To this, the bassist, who was enjoying a beer, pointed out: ‘I’ve been talking to you guys about this song for months, and not until now you’re noticing it.’ In rehearsals, Hauta watched the drummer who was enjoying himself too much, and demanded more double basses. Bass guitar was executed normally.”

‘False Radiance’

Progeny of Sun are:
Niko Aromaa – vocals
Jaakko Hautamäki – guitar
Joni Kiviniemi – guitar
Tuomo Tolkki – bass

Finnish Progeny of Sun released their second single ‘False Radiance’ from the upcoming debut album ‘Throne of Desolation’.
The album is set to be released on December 8th via Inverse Records.
The composer Hauta comments:
“In rehearsals, our drummer always wants the guitars to be louder in the in-ear monitoring. That’s how I got the idea for a song where the drummer would have to play completely on his own and if he concentrates on the guitars, game over. The song didn’t raise great enthusiasm for the singer at first, but as soon as he got his own voice in, he started to like it. Bass was executed normally.”

PROGENY OF SUN
released a new single/video
‘Damsel’
Composed by Joni Kiviniemi
Lyrics by Niko Aromaa
Finnish blackened death metal band Progeny of Sun is set to release their long-awaited debut album ‘Throne of Desolation’ by the end of 2023.
The first single ‘Damsel’ from the upcoming album has been released along with a music video.
The band comments:
“We accidentally managed to compress the entire album’s setting into this song. ‘Damsel’ consists of blasts, speed and aggression, all the while also containing melody, sensitivity and surprise. This is a miniature model of the album, the themes of which can be heard more extensively in the remaining 11 tracks. Joni doesn’t remember exactly how the song came about, but most likely the end result was created semi-accidentally. Two different parts happened to function together and ended up creating a strange cohesion.”
In the beginning Progeny of Sun was a two-man band formed by Jaakko Hautamäki and Niko Aromaa.
Jaakko was responsible for instrumentals, mixing and mastering, and Niko handled vocals, lyrics, media etc.
The songs Jaakko introduced were very versatile.
Some had speed, some were slow, some painted a picture with their atmosphere, and some were more straightforward bangers.
Despite the diversity in style everything worked exceptionally well in tandem and from this premise the band started to develop and pave its own way forward.
To start with, Progeny of Sun created a 6 song self-titled ‘EP’ and discovered the music they do is met with great reception.
They also found a very good publisher for the EP from Inverse Records.
The EP itself was a mix of all kinds of subject matters the band likes to talk about.
The duo behind the band did all the mixing, mastering, videos and artwork themselves.
The project as a whole was very fun and rewarding to work with.
After the EP release Jaakko and Niko began to think that something more was still needed.
They still had the burning desire to go and spread their music around the world but with 2 people it would’ve been impossible.
Subsequently Jaakko found 2 guys who were local musicians around the Seinäjoki area:
Joni Kiviniemi (guitar) and Juha Peura (drums).
Joni and Juha were at first taken on board just to offer vision and play their assigned instrument for new material.
Soon however it began to feel like they are a part of the family, and so it was decided that they will be full-fledged members in the squad and become a part of the band’s story.
Not long after Tuomo Tolkki (bass) was also welcomed to join in, so in a matter of few months the full line up was formed.
The first release with the full line up, a 3 track EP ‘Dark Wanderer’, was released in 2021.
Next in line were single releases ‘Worthless’ and ‘Anguish’ which were released in 2022.
Thanks to the aforementioned experimental phase, Progeny of Sun has gained self-confidence and started to understand its own identity.
The band has been working hard on the debut album ‘Throne of Desolation’, which will be released by the end of 2023.
The title is a reference to someone or something that terrorizes the existence of life in multiple forms when given authority.

Lyrics by Niko Aromaa
Single cover by: Niko Aromaa
Line-Up:
Jaakko Hautamäki – Guitar
Joni Kiviniemi – Guitar
Juha Peura – Drums
Tuomo Tolkki – Bass
Niko Aromaa – Vocals
To continue where ‘Dark Wanderer’ EP left of last year, Progeny of Sun will release two new singles in the beginning half of 2022.
Things are heating up as the new material will sound even more brutal than ever before.
First single ‘Worthless’ is released today and a stunning music video, directed by Doni Bacox.
The band comments:
“The other day while jamming together, Juha and Joni suddenly came up with a frame of a new song. Jaakko listened the demo and had to impose his own vision in order to take the credit of the whole song. During composing Jaakko managed to combine two separate ideas that weren’t originally meant to go together. These ideas merged as one, forming what came out to be perhaps the juiciest track so far. Eventually, after “slight” pressuring, Niko made the vocals and struck gold with them. Even Tuomo was given an opportunity to recompose one part of the bass lines.”
Single’s drums were recorded by Vesa Viitanen
from Napalm to thy Face Prod.
The track is mixed by Anton Sizikov (Empire Studios).
Mastering is handled by Sebastian Has (Behemoth) from Sound Division Studio Poland.
