Doom/Alt Metal project Eldergrey released debut EP ‘Well of Souls’.
Eldergrey, the newly formed heavy doom-laden sludge band, has released their debut EP, ‘Well of Souls’.
Eldergrey emerged shortly after the recording of ‘Burden’ by Outrun The Day in summer 2023, marking the collaborative venture between Ian Field-Richards and Clive Withers.
The creative synergy sparked during the recording of ‘Burden’ inspired the pair to embark on a new musical project that diverged from their previous work with Outrun The Day.
While initially conceived as part of the next Outrun The Day album, it quickly became evident that the new material was slower, darker and heavier, necessitating a distinct musical identity.
Drawing inspiration from bands like Conan and Crowbar, Eldergrey’s sound is characterised by slow, heavy, doom-laden sludge interspersed with dynamic prog-influenced breaks and sweeping solos.
Thematically, the lyrics delve into the nihilistic malaise stemming from contemporary global issues, the complexities of interpersonal relationships in the digital age, and the geopolitical instability mirroring humanity’s stagnation since the hunter-gatherer era.
The five-track demo was completed in Autumn 2023, leading to the formation of the live band, featuring Field-Richards on guitar, Withers on bass and Mike McKay on drums.
The shared responsibilities of lyrics and vocals between Field-Richards and Withers brought a unique dynamic to the band.
Clive Withers contributed lyrics and vocals on ‘Well of Souls’ and wrote the lyrics for ‘Black River’, while Ian Field-Richards added lyrics and vocals for ‘Empire’ and ‘Superlithic’.
Unfortunately, McKay departed in January 2024 due to family commitments.
The final arrangements and recording of the EP were completed in April 2024.
Eldergrey’s debut EP, ‘Well of Souls,’ showcases their distinctive sound and poignant lyrics, setting the stage for their upcoming full-length album, slated for completion in Autumn 2024.
Eldergrey is the creation of seasoned musicians Ian Field-Richards and Clive Withers.
Clive, a Herefordshire-based musician and engineer, has been a long-standing member of Worcester’s Broodmother.
He previously collaborated with Ian on Outrun The Day and now with Eldergrey he contributes bass, vocals, and lyric writing to the project.
Ian is a veteran of the metal scene, known for his role as the guitarist in the influential hardcore/metalcore crossover band SNUB.
SNUB’s impact was undeniable, having shared the stage with iconic bands such as The Misfits, Napalm Death, Earth Crisis, Turmoil, Earthtone9, Iron Monkey, One Minute Silence, Medula Nocte and Stampin’ Ground.
During their tenure, SNUB was signed to Copro Records and released the album ‘Memories in Richter’ under the production of Dave Chang.
Ian also contributed to their second album, ‘The Harvest’, before parting ways with the band.
Beyond his musicianship, Ian created artwork for several releases of the renowned band Earthtone9.
Following his journey with SNUB, Ian embarked on a solo venture, shaping the unique sound of Outrun The Day, which also features Clive.
This project garnered significant acclaim, spending 10 weeks in the Sentinel Daily Top 30 peaking at number 2 in the chart and achieving a mention in the Top 100 releases of 2023.
