With ‘Made of Stone‘, Finnish stoner rock/metal outfit Distressed return not just with a follow-up to their 2023 debut ‘Nothing For No One‘, but with a record that feels broader, bolder, and far more ambitious in scope.
Hailing from Jyväskylä, the band has clearly pushed beyond their initial blueprint, expanding both their sound and their storytelling in ways that mark a decisive step forward.
At its core, ‘Made of Stone‘ still leans on the heavy, riff-driven foundation that defined their early work – thick grooves, weighty guitars, and a clear reverence for the lineage of classic metal.
But this time, the palette is noticeably wider.
Distressed aren’t content to stay in one lane;
instead, they move freely across styles, textures, and moods, creating an album that constantly shifts while maintaining a cohesive identity.
Tracks like ‘Sungod‘ highlight that ambition in striking fashion.
Featuring Miguel Fernandez performing a Pemon Indian jaguar mantra, the song stretches into something almost ritualistic, blending heaviness with a sense of mysticism.
Elsewhere, ‘You Haven’t Found It Yet‘ takes an unexpected turn, channeling the atmospheric pulse and synth-driven sensibilities of ’80s-era Depeche Mode, while ‘Agents of the Groove‘ taps into a sleazy, sun-soaked rock vibe reminiscent of mid-2000s Los Angeles, with shades of Eagles of Death Metal woven into its swagger.
Lyrically, the album shifts just as fluidly.
‘Like Thunder‘ captures the electric exchange between band and audience – the unspoken feedback loop of energy that defines live music – while carrying a playful, almost nostalgic ’80s spirit.
In contrast, ‘Big Fat Lies‘ dives into darker territory, spinning a grimly humorous tale of betrayal and violence beneath the ice of a frozen lake.
Meanwhile, ‘Agents of the Groove‘ reveals a more personal side, exploring the restless anticipation of a new relationship, where time seems to stretch endlessly between moments together.
Formed in 2020, Distressed have navigated their share of obstacles – pandemic disruptions, lineup changes, and the usual growing pains of a young band finding its footing.
Yet those challenges seem to have sharpened rather than stalled their progress.
Their sound, rooted somewhere between grunge, heavy rock, alternative, and metal, has evolved into something distinctly their own, shaped by the individual influences each member brings into the fold.
‘Made of Stone‘ ultimately feels like the work of a band refusing to stand still.
It’s heavier, more diverse, and more confident.
An album that doesn’t just build on the past, but actively reaches beyond it.
