Although it was released on April 11, 2025, ‘Surfaces‘ remains an impressive introduction to Finnish newcomers Cardinal Fleet, a debut EP that showcases a band unafraid to explore the many dimensions of modern heavy music.
Rather than settling into a single stylistic lane, the five-track release embraces diversity, combining familiar metal foundations with an adventurous and experimental spirit.
From the very beginning, ‘Surfaces‘ makes it clear that Cardinal Fleet is interested in creating an immersive listening experience rather than a straightforward collection of songs.
Each of the five tracks stands on its own, presenting a distinct atmosphere, mood and musical identity, while collectively contributing to a coherent artistic vision.
The band describes the EP as an exploration of the many contrasts found within heavy music.
Experimental passages intertwine with powerful riffs, atmospheric textures and recognizable metal elements, allowing every composition to reveal a different side of the band’s creativity.
Despite the stylistic variety, a consistent production approach and a shared sonic character give ‘Surfaces‘ a remarkable sense of unity.
Beneath its dynamic arrangements lies an emphasis on depth and discovery.
The songs reward repeated listening, gradually revealing new details and subtle layers that might initially go unnoticed.
It is this balance between accessibility and experimentation that gives the EP its lasting appeal.
For a debut release, ‘Surfaces‘ demonstrates impressive confidence and musical maturity.
Rather than simply introducing themselves, Cardinal Fleet present a clear artistic statement, one built on curiosity, versatility and a willingness to push beyond conventional genre boundaries.
With ‘Surfaces‘, Cardinal Fleet established themselves as a promising new name in Finland’s heavy music scene.
More than a year after its release, the EP still stands as a compelling example of how modern metal can remain adventurous without losing its emotional impact or powerful core.

‘The Sound Of A Dying Breed’

composed and lyrics by Samuli Rasmus

‘The Sound of a Dying Breed‘ is the third single from Finnish modern metal band Cardinal Fleet’s upcoming EP ‘Surfaces‘ to be released this spring.
Compared to the previous releases, the song takes steps toward harsher soundscape, still not forgetting catchy riffs and sharp melody hooks.
‘The Sound of a Dying Breed‘ is a story about people who pay the highest price from the choices of very few.
About people whose questions are answered solely with lies or silence.
”Why do you shatter the skies above me? Why do you crumble the ground beneath me? Is this cracking noise around me the sound of a dying breed?”

‘The Heat’

Cardinal Fleet are:
Samuli Rasmus – bass, vocals
Tatu Latvala – guitar
Joni-Antti Haveri – guitar
Ville Jyrkkä – drums
Straight from the oven, through your eardrums hits a newborn called Cardinal Fleet…
This quartet from Finland was formed to explore music without any genre limitations – with a focus on the heavier soundscape of course.
Their first release ‘The Heat‘ is influenced by the early 2000s skate punk style, taking you straight back to the Tony hawk’s pro skater-era.
So, now it’s time to turn up the volume, grab the old skateboard and take it for a ride…
Singer and bass player Samuli Rasmus tells about the song:
“Even though glimmers of light may seem distant in times of darkness, they may shine brighter momentarily than you can imagine. And that’s the story ‘The Heat’ wants to tell you. So, take your first steps on the path of deserted dreams, which is all too familiar for most of us. Don’t worry, you won’t need a map. It would just misguide you.”
Cardinal Fleet was founded in early 2024 and their debut EP ‘Surfaces‘ will be released in early 2025…
