Chicago-based project Burying Angels has officially stepped into the spotlight with the release of its debut EP, ‘Cathedral Of Chaos‘.
A fierce tribute to the golden era of Swedish melodic death metal, forged with passion, perseverance, and an impressive cast of metal legends behind the scenes.
Released on May 1st, 2026, and mixed and mastered by legendary producer Fredrik Nordström at the iconic Studio Fredman in Gothenburg, the EP captures the spirit of the classic ’90s Gothenburg sound while giving it a fresh American edge.
At the center of the project is guitarist and songwriter Mark Palangio, whose love for melodic death metal can be traced back to a life-changing encounter with Iron Maiden live footage from Rock In Rio.
That moment sparked an obsession with heavy music, which later evolved into a deep appreciation for the melodic aggression of Swedish pioneers such as In Flames.
In particular, ‘The Jester Race‘ left a permanent mark on Palangio’s musical DNA.
An influence that echoes throughout ‘Cathedral Of Chaos‘ in its soaring harmonies, razor-sharp riffing, and balance between melody and brutality.
But the road toward this debut was anything but straightforward.
In 2009, Palangio was forced to stop playing guitar after suffering a severe blood clot in his left index finger, an injury serious enough to nearly result in amputation.
For more than a decade, music disappeared from his life entirely.
It was only in 2022, after buying a guitar for his daughter, that the spark unexpectedly returned.
Revisiting riffs and unfinished ideas written more than twenty years earlier, Palangio realized those old fragments were always meant to become ‘Cathedral Of Chaos‘.
What began as a personal creative resurrection quickly grew into something much bigger.
The EP features contributions from an extraordinary lineup of musicians connected to bands such as Arch Enemy, Soilwork, Death, King Diamond and Evergrey.
Names like Mattias Eklundh, Andy LaRocque, Peter Wichers, Chris Amott and James Murphy helped transform the project from a personal dream into a fully realized homage to melodic death metal history.
The EP’s first single, ‘Razored Halls‘, released in April 2026, offered the first glimpse into Burying Angels’ sound – sharp, melodic, aggressive and deeply rooted in the atmosphere of classic Gothenburg metal.
Across the four tracks of ‘Cathedral Of Chaos‘, the project channels the spirit of the genre’s golden age while avoiding simple nostalgia.
The production is modern and powerful, yet still carries the cold melodic intensity that defined the Scandinavian scene of the 1990s.
For Palangio, however, this release is more than just a debut.
It is proof that unfinished dreams sometimes only wait for the right moment to return.
And with plans already underway for a full-length album featuring even more collaborations with his musical heroes, ‘Cathedral Of Chaos‘ feels less like a one-off project and more like the beginning of something much larger.
