The Obelisk (USA):
“There’s something ancient and primal about Leaden Fumes approach, speaking to the roots of doom metal as grown out from the NWOBHM, but at no point are they retro in style and their material veers further into extremes as the record plays out through. They are, then, on a journey, and a somewhat grim one at that. The album’s mood, even in its broadest-ranging moments, is consuming in its darkness, and the feeling of threat and paranoia that comes through in their songs is palpable; a conscious challenge being issued to those who’d take them on. So go ahead and do that. Given its underlying nuance and abidingly off-genre-kilter feel, I’m thrilled to host the full stream of ‘Abandon Ship’.”

The follow-up to critically acclaimed debut album ‘Abandon Ship’ from 2020, ‘Kanashibari’ again uses as title the name of one of the album’s songs – this time the really short and experimental instrumental song recorded as an afterthought.
The album was recorded with Marc Obrist of Zeal & Ardor and mastered by Koichi Hara (Boris, Corrupted) and it really has it all – from the fast-paced stoner-stomper to metallic math-rock, from slowly churning post-rock to a moody ballad…
Seven songs that have the angst-ridden singer yell out in defiance of a world gone mad.
Meanwhile the guitars wail and screech, as the bass and drums lay a heavy foundation, such as only a doom rhythm-section can do.
Leaden Fumes are a progressive doom metal band from Switzerland.
The three members are veterans of the local scene, having played in and founded a multitude of bands.
Their Music plays with elements from pop to black metal while retaining the heaviness and slow tempo of classic doom.
‘The Sludgelord’ said the vocals ‘have Pentagram feels’, while ‘The Obelisk’ stated:
“…there’s something ancient and primal about Leaden Fumes approach, speaking to the roots of doom metal as grown out from the NWOBHM, but at no point are they retro in style and their material veers further into extremes as the record plays out.”
Since rising out of the ashes of Phased in 2016, the band has continually evolved and now releases the follow-up to the critically acclaimed debut-album ‘Abandon Ship’.
Swiss label Sixteentimes Music releases ‘Kanashibari’ on vinyl and digital formats.
The album was recorded with Marc Obrist of Zeal & Ardor, and mastered by Koichi Hara (Boris, Corrupted).
It contains seven songs – songs that go from the contemplative and acoustic to the more-drawn-out and heavy;
songs with weird time-signatures and breaks;
songs that defy the doom genre.
While the cover design takes a bow to Japanese record-sleeve art, the title refers to one band-member’s real-life experience of sleep paralysis and feeling that crushing weight on his chest as if possessed by a demon.
‘Kanashibari’ also means ‘metal bound’ – perfectly fitting the music the band pursues.
There are two videos to accompany the release of ‘Kanashibari’:
‘Car Thief’, a self-produced clip, and ‘The Fullness Of Being’ by film-maker Michèle Fleury.
Some bands Leaden Fumes have played with are Elder, Gates Of Slumber, Aluk Todolo, Greenmachine, Lord Vicar, Year Of The Cobra.
They have also appeared on some smaller festivals and headliner shows in Germany, France and Switzerland.
The first album ‘Abandon Ship’ is available on vinyl and CD, as well as download/streaming from various mail-orders and portals.
The video to ‘This Bleeding Cavity’ was shot by Miro Widmer and Julia Minnig.
