Seppo ‘Sepi’ Nummela
1980 – 2025
Helsinki-based doom metal band Denigrate released their fourth full length album titled ‘To the Goddess Unknown‘ on November 29th 2024.
In the beginning of March 2025 the founding member, guitarist and main composer of Denigrate Seppo Nummela passed away suddenly.
The music video for ‘In The Light‘ was filmed earlier and now it is finished and released to honor the memory of Seppo.
Denigrate’s Singer Galzi tells us about the Song and the music video:
“‘In The Light’ was one of the first compositions for the album ‘To The Goddess Unknown’ – the last individual of the album release as a music video. Also the song was the only one from the album that kept its’ work name from the beginning until completion. We wanted to make this a proper art-and-headbanging-video to underline the sheer joy of doing what we do. Huge thanks goes to Markus Saarela for capturing the moments. Though the song tells about taking and giving nothing in return, there dwells a glimpse of hope for a change at the end. This we will dedicate to the memory our key-member, the founder of Denigrate, Seppo Nummela. We’ll keep carrying the torch, don’t you worry brother!”

Helsinki-based melancholic metal band Denigrate releases their fourth full length album titled ‘To The Goddess Unknown‘ on November 29th 2024 via Inverse Records.
Since Denigrate was found back in ’96, the inevitable vibe of the band was to be dark, melancholy, tormented, observative.
The quantity of albums released is really not the thing in this band.
From the first released album in 2003 to the latest 4th one in 2024 called ‘To The Goddess Unknown‘, decades has changed and so has the band.
After no more than three albums released, after big-time local momentum with a finnish cover song, after mandatory hiatus, after some line-up changes, Denigrate 2024 introduces their absolutely greatest masterpiece to date and shows what only truely experienced bunch of members can achieve.

‘Sesame and Lilies’

composed by Seppo Nummela, Teemu Riekki & Timo Kallio
lyrics by Timo Kallio
Helsinki-based metal band Denigrate has released the final single from their upcoming fourth full length album titled ‘To the Goddess Unknown‘ to be released on November 29th 2024 via Inverse Records.
The title of the single ‘Sesame and Lilies‘ is a quotation from John Ruskin (1819-1900) and the song narrates and shakes in the spirit of Pre-Raphaelitism.
The versatile soundscape that is both extremely heavy and fragile.
Like a demolition ball with extremely thin glass surface or a sonata layered with death metal.
Denigrate’s singer Galzi tells about the song:
“‘Sesame and Lilies’ is a story of an artists suffering from the lack of spirituality. He blames everyone but himself of that situation. He blame his muse, quills, the ceiling, the walls, his premises. It’s a lament that is easy for all of us to identify with. But it’s always much harder to face your deficiencies and lift yourself up from that swamp. There is only the way up and the way down. Staying still isn’t an option. What is your choice?”

‘Under Ether’

composed by Seppo Nummela, Timo Kallio
lyrics by Timo Kallio
Finnish metal band Denigrate’s new single ‘Under Ether‘ is a song about admiration that is longing for response and the panic of being rejected.
Helsinki-based band Denigrate releases their fourth full length album titled ‘To the Goddess Unknown‘ on November 29th 2024 via Inverse Records.
Now they have released the third single ‘Under Ether‘ from the upcoming album.
Denigrate’s singer Galzi tells about the song:
“This is the fastest and shortest song on the upcoming album. You could maybe call it radio friendly track. It’s made by our guitarists Sepi and Teemu with their supernaturally ethereal collaboration. We didn’t plan the album to have this kind of musical approach included but mainly just teenage-like enthusiasm and persistence of searching and finding and the joy that comes from that. Lyrics narrate under the feminine theme of the album. They are about connection and search of meaning. They are about admiration that is longing for response, and the panic of being rejected.”

Now they have released the second single single ‘The Apparition of One’ from the upcoming album.
The song includes the very first tunes of this set of compositions.
Mood and speedwise the song is on the higher range on Denigrate’s standard of recent compositions.
Lyrically the song hopelessly yearns the unity of two, whether it be in crime or in balance.

Finnish 1996 founded melancholic metal band DENIGRATE has released their third full length album.
Album titled ‘Blackguard’ is doom metal flavored and maybe the darkest album so far by the band.
Since Denigrate was found the inevitable vibe of the band was to be dark, melancholy, tormented, observative.
The quantity of albums released is really not the thing in this band.
From the first released album in 2003 to the latest 3rd one in 2022 called ‘Blackguard’, decades has changed and so has the band.
After no more than two albums released, after big-time local momentum with a finnish cover song, after mandatory hiatus, after some line-up changes, Denigrate 2022 is at it’s hardest core.
‘Blackguard’ takes you deep, slowly, irreparably.
It’s the place where all beauty and evil befalls.
