The noise of the world, the sudden silence, eternal longing and the stage that is nature form the themes of The Finnish artist Päivi Sihvonen’s debut album.
Right after publishing, her first singles ‘Self-consciousness’ and ‘Dream’ gained recognition on international music websites and have been selected to be broadcast on European radio channels.
Through the passing of time and emotions, a sense on wholeness gets channelled into music in Piper’s debut album ‘What is the heart for?’.
‘Air’ soars in melancholy.
The third single release ‘Air’ is particularly special to its creator.
‘Air’ needs its own spotlight to bring out its sensibility, separate from the other songs on the album.
It was born out of fragility and after the black sun had set.
With heavy feet trailing on the ground, after seven weeks of wailing, ‘Air’ was born, which is the fourth song on the album.
This single is part of the double track on the album, but it also works as a stand-alone piece.
During the stages of songwriting, the songs ‘Eternity’ and ‘Air’ found each other and formed a pair:
the mystery of eternity without reverberation.
After the pain that started in ‘Eternity’, the piano moods of ‘Air’ continue with a similar sadness.
“To me, the arrangement of ‘Air’ needed a delicate melancholy. My song partner Saku found it with a sad guitar version. Hearing it was such a great experience that I took more time with the song and waited until I could sing and rediscover my own voice again. At the same time, I made the decision that fragility can and should be heard”
Päivi describes the process of how the song found its tune, and continues:
“In the end, the song found its place on the album, even though I originally wrote it without any intentions of ultimately releasing it for others to hear. ‘Air’ is the most emotional song on the album.”
A woman and a piano create a strong tone in her debut album ‘What is the heart for?’ the lyrics and the moods of the songs that ended up on the record got their driving force from the challenges of being human, and got their strong framework inspired by nature.
In typical expressive style of Piper, all songs originate from and around the piano.
Other instruments have been added to bring the songs into rock sound.
Other instruments are performed by the talented Saku Anttila.
Born out of feeling.
This record is about the fleeting moments in life and the emotions that reflect those moments.
Feelings are channeled into music and tune that ultimately became the titular Piper.
The overpowering feeling that feels so overwhelming at times and the theme that transpires through every song – this album is named after words left unsaid:
“What is the heart for.. should listen to it more.”

Through the passing of time and emotions, a sense on wholeness gets channelled into music in Piper’s debut album ‘What is the heart for?’.
The noise of the world, the sudden silence, eternal longing and the stage that is nature form the themes of The Finnish artist Päivi Sihvonen’s debut album.
Fully written and composed by the artist herself, the songs tell the story of the woman and the piano, and life’s trials and tribulations.
Päivi also performs all songs, making the songs deeply personal and connected to her own experiences and emotions that reflect the hardships of life.
ON A FANTASY JOURNEY TO MELANCHOLY
“I set out to realize my musical dream with my debut album ‘What is the heart for?’. With it, I want to open up my musical vision of a fantasy world that you can completely immerse yourself in and escape to and create tunes. That world can be a bit broken and melancholic, but it is beautiful. It is a mixture of half-truths, dreams, illusions and fantasy, while being strongly connected to nature. The lyrics connect the work into a story that carries from one song to the next. Each song has a distinct piano melancholy, but they are unique on their own. The melancholic piano metal you hear at the beginning of the album continues in the form of mournful keyboard notes and melodies until the end. The minor-chord sadness of the album is striking, and it’s easy to sink into its beauty.”
THE TONES AND COLORS OF THE MUSIC HEARD ON THE RECORD
“The stage of the songs is strong nature: pine forests with paths filled with the scent of needles, the shores of thousands of lakes, the flower fields of nightless nights and the glow of the northern lights of the fells. The album’s atmosphere is not light, you can hear a lot of sadness faced and felt during that period. Without the tumultuous experiences of life, the album’s story would hardly have been colored from the coal-black landscapes heard at the beginning of the album to the iridescent glow, painted like jewels in pastel shades. The lyrics and the moods of the songs have indeed gotten their driving force from the questions of being human. When lyrics started to emerge, I set out to create an atmosphere around them on the piano. The story as a whole was divided into parts, from which songs began to interweave.”
The album was made in collaboration with Saku Anttila, who arranged the songs and played all the other instruments along with Päivi’s piano compositions.
In the music, you can hear the creative interpretations of the working couple woven together.
The result is a layered, ‘musical painting’, in which Päivi figuratively drew the outlines of a piano note, and Saku completed her art with colors.
The entirety of the album is described by a sentence that was left to be told from the first instrumental song of the album due to the omission of the words:
“What is the heart for.. should listen to it more!”

‘Dream’

The Finnish artist Piper, also known as Päivi Sihvonen, has released her second single release from her soon-to-be released debut album ‘What is the heart for?’.
Immediately after its release, her first single ‘Self-consciousness’ gained international interest on music websites, and it was selected for European radio channels and British radio playlists.
As a continuation of this metal-style single, the second single, ‘Dream’ is about the most beautiful dream in the world, that you want to revisit, but cannot.
‘Dream’ is the album’s sixth song, and this rock ballad transports the listener to wistful landscapes of wishes.
How did the song Dream come about?
“The birth of Dream’s words was special. It was kind of the impetus for writing the lyrics for all my songs. The beginnings of the piano compositions had already begun to emerge, the parts of the songs Eternity and Distance had already formed in my mind. Dream was born at night when I was trying to fall asleep under the glow of the full moon. The words came to me, and I started writing. In January 2020, there was a mesmerising full moon that lasted for many nights. While I was watching the glow of the moon, a chorus started playing in my head and I wrote it down. Listening to inspiration and acting on it was a powerful experience. I explained to someone dear to me that Dream was born when the moon talked and I wrote. The verse that captures the theme of the song goes: ‘Insomnia, I want to sink into sleep, anew this dream.'”
A woman and a piano create a strong tone in her debut album.
‘What is the heart for?’ the lyrics and the moods of the songs that ended up on the record got their driving force from the challenges of being human, and got their strong framework inspired by nature.
Päivi describes:
“I want the public, who discovers my music, to be inspired to make their own interpretations – to give in to being carried away by their emotions.”
Originating from classical, tinged with blues and finding fulfillment in the rock sound, the style wants to be its own, fantasy world-creating experience, without compartmentalization.
The main role is played by a woman and a piano.
In addition, other instruments played by Saku Anttila complete the experience.
Creativity through music and writing helps to open up.
Päivi feels that one should not suppress or try to control one’s own unconsciousness:
“Music, writing and the arts are part of something bigger, for which, being open and receptive, you can act as its channel. You should throw yourself at the mercy of creativity and receive and create with the opening energy. In the aftermath of a breakup from a long relationship years ago, I got through the pain through creativity. Then I made two songs on the piano and wrote them down. I still have not found those notes, one of which I can’t remember at all, but one of them was similar to the piano parts of Dream. As soon as Dream’s lyrics started playing in my head, I connected them to that earlier piano composition of mine. Could they work for that? I wondered. I wanted to try.”
