Jenn Vix brings her formidable charisma and resounding vocal talents to timeless classic ‘In The Air Tonight’ by Phil Collins.
Joining Jenn on this emotional roller coaster is legendary Vernon Reid of Living Color fame on guitar, with Kweenbass playing bass.
Jenn shares her inspiration behind choosing this song, and why it means so much to her:
“I heard ‘In The Air Tonight’ as a child, and from day one, it was a dream of mine to record a cover version of it; I was a child musician and singer. There is just something about it, and I waited for the right time to do it! When I spoke with Vernon Reid about playing on this track, he said that he also has a special memory associated with it, and having him on guitar on the track is an honor!”
Jenn Vix herself is a multi-instrumentalist, adept at bass, lead guitar, synth, programming and vocals.
Vix is something of a bold musical chameleon who also knows who she is and what she does best.
When she’s not releasing solo albums, EPs or singles, she can be found creating music with her post-punk duo Feeney Vix, or collaborating with an incredibly impressive list of musicians, including Andy Anderson (late drummer of The Cure), John Ashton (from The Psychedelic Furs), Ali Score (original drummer of A Flock Of Seagulls), Reeves Gabriels (former Bowie guitarist) and many others.
Vix even stretched her chameleon-like skin, contributed vocals and music tracks for Bob Robertson’s singing skeleton group, Sindy Skinless and the Decomposers and providing vocals on songs by Rodney Linderman of the Dead Milkmen.
Perhaps what Jenn Vix is most know for is her deep, sultry and original vocal style, once which always comes across as informed by deep emotion, trauma, passion and joy.
Her voice is sublime, razor sharp like Annie Lennox (Eurhythmics), along with the edgy spirit of Shirley Manson (Garbage), Florence Welch (Florence + The Machine), Halsey, Pink, and a few other musicians and singers who are not women.
This is certainly evident in the knockout performance she delivers on ‘In The Air Tonight’, which comes with an accompanying music video.
Vernon Reid’s tasteful, perfectly placed guitar expression coupled with Jenn Vix’s emotionally untethered voice make this a truly special and worthwhile cover, as relevant in 2023 as when it was originally released.
