From the depths of Atlantida one of the most violent projects born in the Azores is reborn, with its debut album, after an EP released in 2022, which caused a lot of talk.
Dark Age Of Ruin, a band from São Miguel born in 2020, come to claim the throne of Azorean Black Metal with an extremely furious and hateful album, based on the best that the style produced in Northern Europe during the mid 90s, but more raw, typical of the sound practiced in more recent times.
The duo, formed by vocalist and bassist Hugo Medeiros and guitarist Hugin Medeiros, father and son, bet on a satanic approach and, simultaneously, pronouncedly spiritual and introspective, but without contemplation or mercy, distancing themselves from the more naturist approach of the first work.
The production of the disc, deeply dirty and suffocating, which was in charge of the band itself, makes all the instruments shine, also highlighting the voice, for its originality within the style and for the dark effect it causes on the listener.
On their latest album ‘False Messiah And The Abstract’ the cover is the new sovereign of darkness, and all the abstraction behind him are the souls revolted against the one, who once, sat on the throne of blasphemy.
‘An Heretic Overture’:
“The furious, rage-filled opening that sets you up for the rest of the album. Opening of the disc with an absolutely uncompromising and destructive approach, where the flesh mixes with the coldness of the metal.”
‘False Messiah And The Abstract’:
“The rise of the new sovereign from all that is evil and all its abstraction. Wall of distortion that presents a growing agony, without end, but with a very refined epic sense.”
‘Crucifixion… The Last Drop Of Blood’:
“The art of crucifixion and all divine desires are eroded by his power. The alternation between fast rhythm and very fast and powerful, with moments of ritualistic bestiality.”
‘Golgotha’:
“With this power unleashed, the crowd exiled by the cross revolts against the one who wears a crown of thorns, because only this one had a ‘God’ at the moment of torture. The most chilled and atmospheric theme on the record, evoking some passages of relief, but without ever losing the power of violence.”
‘Sacrificium Of The Lambs’:
“With the pursuit of power, absurdities and inhumanities practiced by divine beings are revealed, and the revolt becomes abysmal. The magic of sacrifice is evident through thunderous riffs, without any mercy or contemplation, as the end is inevitable, with a very deep solo section.”
‘Son Of Satan’:
“On judgment day, it is revealed that the new sovereing is the son of satan, all divinity has been crushed, and the revolt rages ever higher. The initial riff, with many punk and groove influences, is impregnated in the mind, like a voracious leech, accompanying us along an uncontrolled journey until the end of the song.”
‘The Oracle’:
“With the strength of the dark power growing, all deities bowed before the new ruler, thus serving him for all eternity. Track that presents a suffocating and pessimistic ambience, which leaves no room for the hope of relief, as fate is inevitable, like a volcanic mass in eruption.”
‘Blasphemy’:
“The whole world is under blasphemy, the power has taken over the world, freeing those who have been judged and punished unjustly, and chaining all those who have committed blasphemous acts in the name of ‘God’. The blasphemy is embodied in a deeply penetrating musical dynamic, with a very dynamic based on the law of ferocity.”
‘Tenebrous Heathen’:
“The universe is covered by its dark clouds, all sounds are dark, their number is increasing more and more… everyone now has faith in the new lord above. The closing theme, like a source of hopelessness and depression, presents the final weight of an endless and appetizing darkness.”
