To celebrate the release of ‘Flood The Saltpans…Save The Vale’ Coastal Fire Dept. proudly release their music video for ‘Crank’.
Four songs from CFD’s recording sessions for the album ‘Outsiders’ were left over & destined to be forgotten & collect dust.
For some reason it was decided to finish them off, give them a polish & add some additional guitar grit (from Jonny Langlois).
All four songs took on a new grungy lease of life & sounded great together…and that’s how the EP ‘Flood The Saltpans…Save The Vale’ came into being.
The songs deal with topics such as anxiety, OCD, regret & confusion.
All delivered in CFD’s postgrunge style.
Proudly from the Vale, CFD dream of what it would be like if the North of Guernsey was a separate isle (as it was 250 years ago) safe from the madness of modern day life;
flooding the saltpans would be the start of such a plan!
‘Crank’ is the lead single from the ep which showcases CFD in a slightly harder punkier vibe still with those catchy choruses & earworms aplenty.
These are the early signs of things to come.

‘Crank’
‘Crank’ is a soaring catchy post-grunge/altrock track set in today’s (almost) post COVID world.
It’s about folks who think they’re always ill with every little cold, cough, headache, something serious etc.
Ollie got the lyrical idea after reflecting on how he sometimes feels when he faces mental and physical health headwinds from colds to coughs to herniated discs and tinnitus!
The layered guitars and choruses build up throughout ‘Crank’ to end in a crescendo of an outro.
Sing, shout, air drum or air guitar along ‘Craaaannnnk’!
There were absolutely no musical reference points when in the studio.
This is how Coastal Fire Dept. sounds & gives more of an insight into where their musical journey is going.
‘Crank’ is the lead single from their EP ‘Flood The Saltpans…Save The Vale’ out on 30 Jan.
Influenced by US bands such as Nirvana, Balance & Composure, Title Fight & Teenage Wrist the band took those vibes into the studio.
A song hugely influenced by US bands recorded by a British band cranking their sound up.

‘Close to You’
‘Close To You’ is an upbeat & fun post-grunge/altrock track dealing with people who get attached to inanimate objects.
“The lyrical idea came to Ollie after seeing multiple TV shows like Jerry Springer where people came on & talked about their attachment or attraction to ice sculptures, cuddly toys etc.”
“We probably all have our favourite things we love to own or collect or admire!”
“The song came out of the recording session with a dirty driving Foo Fighters feel but we weren’t sure how to end it…& then had the idea of a neat little breakdown! A little different for us!”
The song was written around the same time as previous singles ‘What Do I’ & ‘Cry Your Heart Out’ so has a little of the same vibes.
“Enjoy the driving beats, the catchy chorus & the final breakdown.”
‘Close To You’ will appear on their EP ‘Flood The Saltpans…Save The Vale’ out in January ‘24.
CFD are influenced by US bands like Nirvana, Pixies, Local H, Balance & Composure and Teenage Wrist.

‘Regret’
Guernsey grunge rock band Coastal Fire Dept. aren’t finished throttling 2023 with new music.
Four punky grungy songs left over from their album recording sessions for ‘Outsiders’ have been finished.
All tracks appear on EP ‘Flood The Saltpans…Save The Vale’ out early next year.
First up is single ‘Regret’ taken from the EP to be released on 10 October, 2023.
The song tells the true story of an embarrassing night out in St Helen’s for Ollie some time ago (which is now a regret of his).
Nada Surf’s 1996 hit single ‘Popular’ was the musical influence for ‘Regret’ & Matthew Caws of Nada Surf recently gave ‘Regret’ his seal of approval.
This is almost certainly the first ever grunge single to feature AI performing.
