Ex Big Country Bassist Tony Butler’s new single ‘Give Them Back Their Freedom‘ leads new solo album ‘No Profit in a Peaceful World‘ launched 28th April 2025.
Tony Butler is in a reflective mood with his new single ‘Give Them Back Their Freedom‘ which covers his thoughts on the Ukraine/Russia conflict;
themes that he continues in his new solo album ‘No Profit in a Peaceful World‘.
Tony is best known as the bass player from twice Grammy-nominated Big Country who enjoyed phenomenal success in the 80s and 90s.
The band released nine studio albums with sales of over 8 million copies, had 17 top 30 singles in the UK, and toured all over Britain, Europe, USA, Canada and Japan, as well as supporting artists including Queen, David Bowie and the Rolling Stones.
Tony released his new single ‘Give Them Back Their Freedom’ on Monday 14th April, 2025.
And says:
“Most of us have seen via TV and social media, the invasion of Ukraine by Russia. This song is to show my support for a country that has wrestled with their neighboring country for longer than I have been alive…The fact that both countries suffered so much against a cruel and murderous enemy back in the 1940s but is still determined to spill blood in this modern day seems senseless. Life should never be this cheap. If Russia wants an East – West buffer zone, then their current actions do not show the way forward (or maybe that is not their real reasoning). This kind of war is senseless. Ukraine has suffered enough. This song is about finding a better way of getting along and keeping the peace. As John Lennon once said, ‘give peace a chance’.”
As the lead single to the album ‘No Profit in a Peaceful World‘, it sets the tone for what Tony says is a “personal reflection on how I see life not advancing in a peaceful way throughout my life.”
“’No Profit in a Peaceful World’ represents capitalism on steroids, greed, authoritarianism/fascism and the total disrespect of human life for those who want to prosper unnecessarily, regardless of the consequences.”
Other songs on the album are more personal to Tony himself, including an ode to Cornwall on the track ‘I Call It Home‘.
A real labor of love, Tony has written, produced and played all the songs on the album;
“Apart from two guitar solos, I play everything.”
he adds.
‘No Profit in a Peaceful World‘ has been released on Monday 28th April on all digital platforms, as well as physical media, including CD and a special limited edition double vinyl pressing.
The new album has being launched at Fab Café in Manchester on Sunday 27th April and has featured the first ever playback of the album, Q & A session, as well as an acoustic set from Tony Butler.
