‘Inverted’
Lyrics & composition & arrangement by Panu Pentikäinen & Petteri Erkintalo
Finnish Helsinki-based progressive melodic rock band Darkness Is My Canvas is set to release their new EP ‘White Noise’ later in 2023 via Inverse Records.
The third single ‘Inverted’ from the upcoming EP has been released.
The band comments:
“Musically ‘Inverted’ is DIMC’s tribute to the progressive rock of the ’70s, topped with elements from the EMO bands of the 2010s. Melody-wise, this song is one of our most versatile ones, and the audience just can’t get enough of it during our live performances. The lyrics are about insomnia and what lack of sleep does to a person. We’ve always been interested in making songs in different ways and trying different approaches. With ‘Inverted’ the audience can hear a marriage between Jethro Tull and My Chemical Romance. The guitar solo is epic, of course, and during the solo, we even step onto Jazz’s toes. We’ve always thought that creatively ‘nothing is too much’ for us, as we want to do this from our perspective and desire.”

The second single ‘Drown’ from the upcoming EP is a track that needs no further introduction.
It’s originally recorded by Bring Me The Horizon.
The band comments:
“‘Drown’ is a song released by Bring Me The Horizon in 2014, which according to one interpretation, is about severe depression. Our singer Pete struggled with depression in his teenage years and he thinks that the song is about the depths you can sink into if you don’t have trusted people around you. ‘Drown’ has been an empowering song for us in the past few years and we wanted to make our own interpretation of it. Darkness Is My Canvas reflects many themes related to mental health in its music. Bring Me The Horizon also themes their lyrics in a way that they are universal and relatable through their own perspective. We have been listening to ‘Drown’ since its release in 2014 and later added it to our setlist. In its final version, the song ended up on our EP without any hesitation from both us and Inverse Records. ‘Drown’ may be so important to someone that radical changes to the song’s atmosphere could cause alienation from it. We listened to different arrangements of ‘Drown’ played by BMTH and picked the most suitable parts for our instruments. Panu wanted to add a 90s grunge vibe to the song. Pete’s vocals range from soft baritone to screaming. We really like the end result – we managed to get a strong interpretation out of Pete. Mikko Kaakkuriniemi did a great job on the drums (which was not a surprise), and Panu had an easy time playing bass, guitars, and singing backing vocals.”
Darkness Is My Canvas (DIMC) was founded in Helsinki in 2017.
The band plays melodic rock combined with progressive elements, stylistically influenced by bands such as Muse, Queen, Pink Floyd, Leprous, and on occasion also Porcupine Tree and My Chemical Romance.
Their catchy melodies have many musical hooks, and the band likes to throw curve balls at the audience by changing time and style mid-song – and they do this completely intentionally.
The imaginative sound of DIMC wells up from the melody-rich guitar playing of Panu and the voice of Pete, who, some say, sounds like the young David Bowie.
All the songs of DIMC come from the mind and pen of Pete and Panu, who are also the ‘founding fathers’ of the band.
They also play all the other instruments in the studio beside the drums, which are trusted to some of the top drummers in Finland.
The mastering is done by none other than Grammy Award winner Nicolas Fournier (LA) who’s had his hands on many recordings by many of the band’s idols (Muse, Linkin Park, Adam Lambert, etc.).
DIMC was founded on what was left from the previous band of multi-instrumentalist Panu and lead singer/guitarist Pete.
It was called May:Day, and it represented some sort of an amalgamation of Finnish progressive rock of the 70s and more modern Finnish rock music.
Should someone want to listen to their album ‘I’, they will find it by digging through the Internet, as it has not been officially released.
DIMC needed to distinguish themselves from the previous band as they changed their language from Finnish to English and their style became more nuanced.
To date, DIMC has released one EP called ‘Monsters’ and one single called ‘The Game’.
Their songs have been downloaded quite nicely from streaming services such as Spotify, in which the counter reached 20.000 this March.

‘Fade Into The White Noise’
Composed and lyrics by Panu Pentikäinen & Pete Erkintalo
Finnish Helsinki-based progressive melodic rock band Darkness Is My Canvas released the first single ‘Fade Into The White Noise’ from their upcoming EP ‘White Noise’ which is set to be released later in 2023 via Inverse Records.
The band comments the single:
“Of our singles, FITWN has been the most demanding one arrangement-wise. We’ve been playing this song since the summer of 2022, testing different versions on our gigs to see how the audience reacts to them. The chorus has been practically the same, but many hours have been poured into the lyrics, vocals, and instruments to make them just right. Story-wise, FITWN represents the typical Darkness Is My Canvas, where the storyteller brings out his own interpretation of things that can be seen in many different ways. Dealing with topics of mental health, as many of our songs do, the lyrics are basically pretty straightforward. The audience loves it, so we decided to select that as the opening song and track of our EP. We want to make our songs relatable, which means we try to make them so that both the melody and the lyrics have a strong pull. We think this song has just that. It’s also timeless and bears listening many times over.”
Joni Kantoniemi, A&R Inverse records:
“What impressed us the most with DIMC was that their stuff is extremely well put together and that these guys sound as good live as they do in the studio. We are thrilled as to the possibilities of our partnership.”
