GOTHONY
has released album
‘Gothony’
The Finnish metal band Gothony released their long-awaited self-titled debut album on January 12th 2024 via Inverse Records.
‘HOLOGRAM’:
“‘HOLOGRAM’ is slower and maybe even moves somewhat in the pop world, but contains lots of melody. The song starts and ends with the seagulls of Helsinki market square. What is the meaning of seagulls?: is the past also present in the present, i.e. part of causality chains continuum or is this all just an illusion, maybe we live in a hologram…”
‘PATIENT 2442’:
“‘PATIENT 2442’ is a masterpiece of drama metal composed by Mika Uusitalo. When perfect drama and metal combine, the result is this. Beautiful melancholic and melodic riffs that create a soundscape of sorrow supported by drums that push the momentum forward. Vocals reflect the eternal sruggle between the light and the Dark. Guest vocalist Kata Samula’s beautiful and powerful voice crowns the song. A journey into a mind that has lost its integrity…”
‘ANTS’:
“‘ANTS’ is mainly composed by M. Toivonen, but Mika Uusitalo has also added his vision to it. The song is on the rougher side of Gothony’s production and is full of drama in every aspect. Although individual people – especially warlike dictators – sometimes feel that they are part of a great divine plan, on a cosmic scale we are just ants on top of each other.”
‘IN THE SHADOW OF THE MOON’:
“‘IN THE SHADOW OF THE MOON’ is the latest creation of drama metal. When the three heroes (M.Toivonen, Mika Uusitalo and Väiski Syväoja) put their heads together for the composition, you can hear a return to the atmosphere of the 90s and the rustling of wings from metal classics. The song is crowned by Wuohi’s lyrics about the search for meaning and the disappointment when the search does not yield results… A drama metal classic has been born…”
‘MY PAIN’:
“‘MY PAIN’ is the first song composed after the reunion. It is composed around the riff of the song Unknown world of my Dreams, which is on the 1995 demo. Mika Uusitalo is mainly responsible for the composition, but there is couple drama riffs from Väiski Syväoja. It was an honor to have Jasmin Anglén (Ratbreed, Möckingbird) as a guest vocalist for the song. She if anyone sheds new light on this riff from the 1995 demo. It’s pointless to look for light in Wuohi lyrics, they tell a tale about the pain that overwhelms a person, leaving behind only agony and anguish.”
‘CRYSTAL DREAM APOPHIS’:
“‘CRYSTAL DREAM APOPHIS’ has been re-recorded in its almost original form from the 1997 ‘Hidden Thoughts’ demo. This drama metal classic was created by M.Toivonen, both in terms of composition and lyrics, at the age of 17 in 1997. The song was updated to a slightly more modern 2023 version, but its basic structure and riffs are allmost the same.”
Jouko Piho: “I believe that it is about something mentioned in Revelations chapter 8, verses 8-11, about something plunging into the sea, which is as big as a mountain, and about a big star falling from the sky and burning like a torch called Wormwood.”
‘DISARM THE GODS’:
“‘DISARM THE GODS’ started with Väiski Syväoja’s bass riff, around which Mika Uusitalo created a chorus and a melancholic frame. In the song, you can even sense Finnish schlager/instrumental rock: that’s why the working name was Sorsakoski. Wuohi lyrics are not related to the Finnish schlager, but deal with how religion is weaponized to achieve one’s own goals.”
‘RAPACITY’:
“‘RAPACITY’ took quite a while until it found its way into a finished drama metal product. M. Toivonen, Mika Uusitalo and Miika Peräkangas are responsible for the composition of the song. The melodic and harsh riffs of the song reflect images of climate change and the destructive chaos caused by greed.”

Gothony 2024 album
Finnish 1993 founded, Helsinki-based Drama Metal band Gothony is set to release their long-awaited self-titled debut album on January 12th 2024 via Inverse Records.
The process of making Gothony’s album started at the end of 2019 when Gothony decided to jump on stage and play the hit songs of the 90s after a 20 year break.
“The first new song ‘My pain’ was played at the comeback gig. We also decided to re-record the song ‘Crystal dream’ from the 1997 ‘Hidden thoughts’ demo.”
In November 2022, they recorded almost all of the material in Helsinki Pitäjänmäki at Studio ManCave.
Recordings were also made at the training flat in Helsinki Lauttasaari, where e.g. the drums were recorded. M. Toivonen was the Technician and recorder of the album.
Besides Gothony Toivonen also plays drums in Ratbreed and Catabolic.
Mixing and mastering was done by virtuoso Juho Räihä (SoundSpiral Audio).
The first single ‘Patient 2442’ was completed in April 2023 and was released with a music video by Kimmo Jaatinen (direction, cinematography, screenplay, editing).
The second single ‘In the Shadow of the Moon’ was released in early July 2023.
“Now (already) 30 years after Gothony was founded, it’s time to rise from the ashes and publish our debut album, which bears the same name as our first demo: GOTHONY…”
The album release show is on Saturday 27.1.2024 at Skenesali (Vantaa, Myyrmäki).

Finnish Helsinki-based melodic death metal band Gothony released their first official single and music video ‘Patient 2442’ via Inverse Records.
The band is founded in 1993 so it’s about time.
The track is taken from the upcoming debut album which is set to be released later in 2023.
Bass player Väiski Syväoja comments the single:
“‘PATIENT 2442’ is a masterpiece of drama metal composed by Mika Uusitalo. When perfect drama and metal combine, the result is this. When I heard the song for the first time, I immediately knew that I had to get my very good friend Kata Samula to sing on this. The song screamed for Kata’s beautiful voice and the end result is like a perfect musical that you don’t want to end. The initial idea of the song starts in 2021 and is the first composition after Gothony’s Reunion (2019). After the joint arrangement work, the song was ready in 2022. For me, this is one of my favorite songs, Why, of course, because of the happy bass at the end of the song. After all, the bass is the most important thing in music, or maybe just after the bass player.”
Väiski continues about the music video:
“When we decided to continue Gothony’s journey in 2020, that’s when I decided that at least one music video should be made. When we chose the first single song to be ‘Patient 2442’, I created a synopsis based on it. I didn’t want to make a music video of just the band playing, but for the video to have story and leave the conclusions to the viewer. I am very grateful that Kimmo Jaatinen came along and we finished the script together. Kimmo also took over the directing, filming and editing of the music video. Many thanks go to the entire professional music video crew who joined this project…”
Guitarist Miika Peräkangas comments:
“Rough grinding in beautiful madness. Beautiful as Dawn, treacherous as The sea. A gemstone of Drama metal…”
Vocalist Wuohi concludes:
“Beautiful melancholic and melodic riffs that create a soundscape of sorrow supported by drums that push the momentum forward. Vocals reflect the eternal sruggle between the light and the Dark. A journey into a mind that has lost its soundness.”
Gothony was founded in 1993 with the line-up:
Mikko: drums and vocals
Mika: guitar + vocals
Miika: guitar
Väiski: bass
This line-up released two demos in the 90s in 1995 (Gothony) and 1997 (Hidden thoughts).
Gigs mostly in the capital region, e.g. Oranssi klubi, Semifinal and at the legendary Thunder Road House.
In 1999, the band broke up.
There was no drama in the breakup, but everyone went toward different directions in life.
In 2019, it was decided to reassemble Gothony to revive the past and play old songs.
Mikko, who handled the vocals in the original line-up, gave the vocal responsibilities to Wuohi of the 90s group’s Bleed me tears and Katharsis.
In 2020, Gothony went to Tuska-Torstai and Emergenza to get a feel for live show’s.
After the gigs, a decision was made to start working on new songs and continue Gothony’s story.
In April 2023, it’s time to release a new song as a single and a music video.
The full-length album will be released in autumn 2023.
